Ampelmann leads the market for offshore personnel transfers: wave-compensating gangways that let people walk safely from a moving vessel onto rigs and wind farms. The technology was world-class, but the way it was operated hadn't caught up: every system required two operators to manoeuvre. With a growing fleet, that adds up fast: more people offshore, higher costs, and scarce specialists spending their time on work the data could do.
Short scrum cycles in which design and development worked parallel in one lean process, with Ampelmann at the table for conceptualisation, execution and validation. We built a real-time data visualisation tool in Angular and NodeJS. Experience mapping and quantitative research determined what an operator genuinely needs to decide whether the system can be deployed; everything else stayed off the screen. The result is deliberately unspectacular: one reliable web app that shows exactly the right information at the right moment.
One operator now does what used to take two. Across the fleet, Ampelmann brought the team down from two operators to one per deployed system, with real-time data underpinning every go/no-go decision. It became the start of a partnership that runs to this day: To this day we maintain the data backbone between Ampelmann's offshore assets and the cloud.
